West Dean Gardens and College

This was once home to Edward James, friend to surrealist artists Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. The Estate itself was named in the Domesday Book, and was owned by various Earls of Arundel and Dukes of Norfolk until 1572 when Elizabeth I accused the sitting Duke of Norfolk of treason and took both his property and his head. But it is the fascinating Edward James whose life is stamped all over West Dean, in the two trees he could not bear to see die and so preserved their stumps in resin. West Dean Gardens are glorious. And there is wonderful coffee to be had in the café, too.
