The route

  1. Park at the car park just north of Chanctonbury (BN44 3DR) and walk south along the lane and climb Wiston Bostal up to the South Downs Way.

  2. At the crossroads at the summit, turn left along the South Downs Way and stay on it for quite some distance, ignoring the first path to the left, and continuing.

  3. When you reach the stone monument dedicated to a Sussex farmer, turn right, leaving the South Downs Way and follow the restricted byway (Monarch’s Way).

  4. Drop down a steep hill into the valley and at the bottom, turn left onto a bridleway that runs along the valley bottom (Stump Bottom) towards Cissbury.

  5. At the T-junction by the dew pond, turn right.

  6. At the top of the hill, go through the gate and turn right through the car park at Cissbury Ring, heading for Chanctonbury.

  7. Follow the long track all the way back to the crossroads at Chanctonbury. Go straight on at the cross-path back down Wiston Bostal.
