The Devil's Jumps

These five bronze age barrows are right on the South Downs Way, not far from Treyford in West Sussex. Rather wonderfully, they are aligned with the midsummer setting sun but they are impressive any time of year. There is a legend that the devil was jumping from barrow to barrow and making such a hullaballoo that he disturbed Thor who was resting on nearby Treyford Hill. Grumpily, Thor threw a boulder at him, and the devil took off, vowing never to return.

Parking: Park at the Royal Oak, Hooksway, B2141, Chichester PO18 9JZ, then walk NE up the hill on the restricted by-way to join the South Downs Way.
